Tulip Tree

The Craigtoun Tree Trail starts at the Wishing Well, where you will find our first specimen - a Tulip Tree.

  • Deciduous tree (loses its leaves in winter)

  • Yellow / green banded orange flowers resembling tulips

  • Look out for the flowers in June, often at the top of the tree

  • Member of the magnolia family

  • Native to eastern North America

  • Maximum height - 36m

  • Distinctive butter yellow leaves in autumn

Tulipwood is strong and easy to work and was used by the first North American settlers to make dug-out boats. Used extensively in the library of the Glasgow School of Art building, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
