Purple Beech

Our beautiful Purple Beech plays a central role in the park in that it forms the centre piece of the Go-kart track so it's very easy to spot!

  • Deciduous tree (loses its leaves in winter), also known as Copper Beech

  • Easily recognised by its silvery, smooth trunk and dark purple / red leaves

  • One of the UK’s tallest broadleaves and can grow to 40m

  • Appeared as natural mutants of the common beech in various parts of Europe as early as the 15th century

  • The tree in Craigtoun Park was planted in 1953 to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II

  • Widely used as an attractive and outstanding park tree

Beech wood is popular for making furniture. Beech nuts can be fed to pigs.
