Common Yew

The second tree on our trail, a Common Yew, is located inside the Fairy Glen.

  • Conifer with evergreen needle-like leaves

  • Seed has a red, fleshy cover (aril)

  • One of the world’s longest-lived trees

  • Long-lived, up to 2,000 years

  • Oldest specimens often found in graveyards

  • Associated with pagan traditions and a symbol of immortality

  • Maximum height - 25m

Yew wood is easy to work and is ideal for carving and other high value applications. Anti-cancer compounds are harvested from the foliage and used in modern medicine.
