I started my voluntary work at Craigtoun during the pandemic. Initially I was painting the fences. I was welcomed by the team at Craigtoun and found working there uplifting. I particularly enjoyed chatting to visitors, sharing positive experiences about being outdoors.
When the pandemic was drifting into the past, I started working at the seasonal events and activities. Again the Craigtoun team were very supportive and trained me up to fulfil my duties, also being informed of health and safety. I really enjoyed working with the children and their families. There was a mutual enthusiasm. I was amazed that families would travel from all over to visit Craigtoun Park. The children enjoyed the variety of activities. I would often be the guard on the train or the tractor. It was wonderful to see the excitement and anticipation on the children's faces. Not only that, the adults loved the fun and laughter too. I was also delighted to hear the stories of the generations who’d visited Craigtoun over the decades. There was a true sense of family occasions and a natural environment that suited.
Five years on, I am still here! For me, Craigtoun brings a sense of joy and exploration as well as a sense of belonging and comfort. The experience of Craigtoun, whether you’re a volunteer, an employee or a visitor, is truly uplifting, positive, joyful and memorable. Children especially like the excitement of exploring new adventures.
As a volunteer, my life has a new dimension. The pleasure from volunteering is hard to put into words. I can only say I love working at Craigtoun and I feel they’re part of my new family.
