The Cypress Avenue

The Cypress Avenue runs through the centre of Craigtoun Country Park with a stone centre piece in the middle.

  • A double line of trees called the Cypress Avenue

  • Mostly Lawson Cypress (Chamaecyparis lawsoniana)

  • Conifer with evergreen short, scale-like leaves

  • Native to California, grown extensively in southwest Oregon

  • Introduced to the UK in 1854

  • Named after Scottish nurseryman and plant collector, Charles Lawson (1795 - 1873)

  • Not to be confused with Leyland Cypress (x Cuprocyparis leylandii)

  • Provides valuable shelter for nesting birds

Timber is susceptible to rot so is not suited to outdoor use.
