Dawn Redwood

At the bottom corner of the Go-kart track, on the edge of the main pathway around the Boating Pond, you will find the 8th tree on the trail - a majestic Dawn Redwood.

  • Deciduous conifer (loses its needles in winter)

  • Bright green, feathery leaves turn orange-brown in autumn

  • Native to southwest China; only discovered in 1947

  • It had only been seen in ancient fossils before - hence its nickname “the living fossil”

  • An expedition was sent from Harvard, USA, to collect seeds and these were sent all over the world in an attempt to preserve the tree

  • Distinct from the two other redwood trees (Coast and Giant Redwoods) which are evergreen

  • Can grow to 35m in height
